'Goat' - Chelsea fans ecstatic with Timo Werner goal in Carabao Cup win over Aston Villa

Timo Werner is off the mark for the new campaign after opening the scoring against Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup.

Thomas Tuchel's side made it difficult for themselves on the night, and after they had no immediate answer to Cameron Archer's 64th minute equaliser, the game finished level at full-time.

As per Carabao Cup rules, there was no extra-time, and the two sides went straight to penalties at Stamford Bridge.

However, the Blues did enough to get over the line, as they went onto convert four of their five spot kicks to give them a 4-2 penalties win, with Reece James converting the winning shot.

Werner's goal stood out on its own in a night of few positives.

The German has played second fiddle to £97.5million signing Romelu Lukaku so far this season, with most of his appearances coming from the substitutes' bench.

Although he showed a lot of attacking potential when he came on against Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday, Werner failed to convert his chances in front of goal and looked a bit shy of confidence.

That being said, Werner's performance did show that there is potential for a frightening forward partnership in the future, as his pace complimented Lukaku's hold-up play extremely well against Nuno Espirito Santo's side.

And as one of several changes made by Tuchel for the clash with Villa, Werner took his chance when called upon after he converted a delightful cross from Reece James to nod the Blues in front.

His effort pleased Chelsea fans who are simply happy to see him doing well.

Chelsea will now face Southampton at home in the fourth round of the competition in the last week of October.

But they still have plenty of games to focus on before then, starting with a vital clash against Manchester City in the league on Saturday.

The Blues and City have emerged as early title contenders, and a win for either team will be a big statement moving forward.
