Goalkeeper released by Newcastle United signs contract extension with Manchester United

Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Paul Woolston has been handed a contract extension by Manchester United.

The 21-year-old, who the Magpies released on a free transfer, left Newcastle in 2018 has impressed behind the scenes at Old Trafford and will work as a back-up for the likes of David de Gea, Sergio Romero and Lee Grant.

The North Shields-born stopper, who had loan spells at Gateshead, Darlington, Blyth Spartans and South Shields, represented England at Under-17 and Under-18 level - but the Magpies let him go two years ago and have since signed former Bolton Wanderers keeper Jake Turner.

Despite picking up an arm injury, Man United extended his deal this week.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: "We have quite a few talents in that youth team that you'd like to see and you probably will see at some point before next season.

"Because that's what it's about now."

Woolston is now on the books until 2021 and will be looking to get back into Man United's Under-23 side when he recovers from his injury.
