Goa to get normal monsoon this year, say meteorologists

PANAJI: Goa will receive normal monsoon rainfall this year, meteorology experts said on Thursday.

“The La Nina phenomenon in the central Pacific Ocean till the mid-monsoon month of July will result in normal monsoon rainfall in the state. However, a negative phase of the Indian Ocean dipole can change the seasonal rainfall distribution in different months,” meteorologist and former chief scientist at the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), M R Ramesh Kumar said.

He said that the active break cycles within the monsoon life cycle will ultimately decide the fate of this year’s monsoon.

Meanwhile, the India meteorological department (IMD) on Thursday also forecast a normal rainfall.

It will be fairly well-distributed monsoon rainfall for most parts of the country during the June-September period, IMD said.

“The IMD forecast this time is that the national average southwest monsoon rainfall for this season will be around 99% of the normal value, which is around 868mm,” IMD scientist Rahul M said.

This year, IMD has introduced a new rainfall normal figure based on 1971-2020 data, showing a marginal decline in monsoon rainfall and overall annual rainfall in the country over the long period. As a result, the all-India rainfall for the southwest summer monsoon is 870mm as against the earlier normal figure of 880mm based on the 1961-2010 period, whereas the southwest monsoon season is 870mm, a figure that replaces the earlier normal of 880mm.
