Goa: Crumbling ceiling at Valpoi govt school risks lives of students, teachers

VALPOI: Students, teachers and other staff at Government Higher Secondary School, Valpoi, face a serious risk to their lives owing to the dilapidated condition of the school structure.

Earlier this week. small portions of the ceiling collapsed on students during an ongoing lecture. However, no injuries were reported.

The rebars in the ceiling were even left exposed after the incident.

Parents have requested Valpoi MLA and health minister Vishwajit Rane to highlight the issue in the ongoing assembly session.

President of the school's parent-teacher association, Santosh Gaonkar said that the structure is in a dilapidated condition and hundreds of students are at the risk.

"If the school collapses, then who will accept responsibility?" he asked.

Gaonkar said that the government is undertaking repair works of primary schools, but higher secondaries are being ignored.

"Schools with 10 students are repaired quickly. I don't understand why the government is ignoring our school with around 500 students," Gaonkar said.
