Goa: After Wednesday’s showers, rainfall now at 3% surplus

PANAJI: Two centres, Ponda with 90mm and Sanguem with 75mm, received heavy rainfall while the others received moderate showers, as the vigorous phase of monsoon activity swelled the surplus to 3% on Wednesday.

During August, the monsoon activity had been dull and only 51% of the rainfall for the month had been recorded by the India meteorological department (IMD), Panaji. The overall deficit had touched 2%.

Widespread rainfall during the past 24 hours produced the wettest spell of 47mm for this season in September. “The rainfall during the last 24 hours is due to the low pressure area over south west Madhya Pradesh and parts of north Maharashtra,” an IMD official said.

The system, which had developed into a well-marked low pressure area, weakened into a low pressure area on Wednesday.

During the past 24 hours other centres recorded moderate rainfall. Canacona and Sakhali received 62.2mm each, Valpoi 52.9mm, Mapusa 50mm, Quepem 42.2mm, Panaji 38.9mm, Margao 33.1mm and other centres on a lesser scale.

The seasonal total is now nudging towards normal, touching 2,855mm on Wednesday, as compared to a normal of 2,778.2mm at this stage.

IMD, Panaji has forecast heavy rainfall in isolated places over the next few days while a low pressure area is likely to form on September 11 in the Bay of Bengal.
