Travel packages at discounted prices covering travel to and from Tokyo went on sale Friday in the government's Go To Travel domestic tourism campaign.
The capital's inclusion in the campaign, which was launched in July to support the tourism industry but initially excluded Tokyo, is scheduled to start on Oct. 1.
Also on Friday, the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry said it would ask travel agencies not to charge travelers cancellation fees even if Tokyo ends up not being included in the campaign.
If Tokyo is added, travel plans that had already been booked for Oct. 1 and later will be eligible for the discounts. Those who had already made reservations will need to contact their travel agencies and ask them to switch to plans that come with the discounted prices. The government will cover any losses incurred by operators as a result of cancellations.
Tourism minister Kazuyoshi Akaba said at a regular press conference on Friday that the government does not want to discourage tourists from canceling their plans if it means preventing the spread of infections.
