It is a tradition to have an assortment of sweets at birthday parties: cupcakes, cookies, ice cream, and, of course, the iconic cake as the centerpiece. Typically, the icing is a favorite for cake fans. However, is there such a thing as too much frosting? One woman believes so, calling out Walmart for the amount of frosting they added to her daughter’s birthday cake.
What is wrong with this Walmart cake?
During her daughter’s birthday party, Los Angeles-based TikToker Ashley Lynn (@xoxo.ashleylynn) unveils the mostly eaten heart-shaped, layered cake on a table.
“So, I got this cake from Walmart. Why is it that thick of frosting?” she asks, pointing to the three inches of pink frosting lathered on top. Eventually, she was overwhelmed by it. “I had to wipe it off. Like, there’s so much,” she says, quickly panning over to reveal the chunks on a separate plate she removed from the cake’s bottom border. Then the content creator returns to the dessert, and she focuses on a thin layer of frosting at the center. “Look at that,” she remarks.
Viewers were divided
The video racked up over 126,000 views. The cake-to-frosting ratio repulsed those who sided with Ashley.
“Looking at this makes my stomach hurt,” one viewer commented.
“As a cake girly, that has about 95% too much frosting!” another concurred.
Meanwhile, others had no sympathy, claiming she got what she paid for.
“It’s from Walmart did you think it was going to be good. go to Publix next time,” one commenter stated.
“What do you expect its a less than $30 cake,” a second said.
Ashley addressed the criticisms in the comments section, “Like the cake [doesn’t] taste bad, but for some reason, I just don’t care for frosting.”
Does Walmart bakery add more frosting to its cakes?
A Walmart employee who works in that department had an answer for Ashley.
“As a Walmart bakery team lead and cake decorator, this is how much frosting you’re gonna take [especially] if [it’s] a heart shaped because if [it’s] not like that, you’re going to get a crumbly cake,” they explained.
There isn’t public information about how much frosting the retailer uses. However, Tasting Table reported customers complaining about the cakes, calling them ‘too sugary’ and ‘sweet,’ while another said the frosting tasted ‘cheap.’ Although customers can’t decide how much to add or the flavor to a premade cake, custom ones are a different story.
When designing your cake on Walmart’s Custom Cakes section, you can choose from two icings: buttercream and whipped. For those who like a thick, rich texture, buttercream would be it. However, whipped is for those who prefer a light, fluffier consistency. Adding messages, decorations, and top borders adds more layers of frosting.
