The Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry has launched an online service that allows users to peruse a map of businesses that accept discount coupons issued under the government-backed Go To Travel tourism support program.
The coupons, which became valid this month, are being distributed to travelers for use at souvenir shops and eateries at popular travel destinations as incentive for consumer spending, with about 143,000 businesses nationwide registering for the campaign (as of Thursday).
The online map has been posted at https://goto.jata-net.or.jp/
Travelers can use the global positioning system on their smartphones to locate stores in their proximity, or search by prefecture or by business types such as eateries, retailers and tourist facilities. Users can also search by prefecture for bus and taxi operators that accept the coupons.
The campaign, which offers a discount of up to 35% (a maximum of 14,000 yen) on travel expenses per person per night that comes with a coupon worth 15% of the total cost per person to be spent per day, or up to 6,000 yen.
The coupons are accepted, only over the duration of the trip, in prefectures to which visitors travel and also in neighboring prefectures.
