Go strong - the Sunderland XI fans want to see at Scunthorpe tonight

Sunderland fans want Phil Parkinson to field a strong Black Cats XI for tonight's EFL Trophy clash at Scunthorpe.

The Wearsiders knowing that only a win in 90 minutes will see them through to the knockout stages of the competition.

Sunderland famously reached last year's final - only to lose on penalties to Portsmouth at Wembley.

But their continued participation in this season's competition relies on a positive result tonight.

And with Saturday's scheduled League One game at Bristol Rovers postponed due to international call-ups, Black Cats fans want to see a strong side fielded this evening.

Fans using our team selector tool have made only minor changes to the side, with Lee Burge getting the nod over Anthony Patterson between the sticks.

It's the tried and test centre-back partnership of Jordan Willis and Joel Lynch and the back, with Bali Mumba at right-back - a position Parkinson's No 2 Steve Parkin suggested could be a future role for the youngster.

Fans have opted against the first-choice of midfield of George Dobson and Max Power, preferring to give Dylan McGeough and Grant Leadbitter another chance in the engine room.

But the attacking roles remain strong, with Duncan Watmore and Aiden McGeady on the flanks, and Will Grigg and Marc McNulty in up front.

Parkinson is without Jon McLaughlin, Conor McLaughlin, Tom Flanagan and Benji Kimpioka who are international duty, while Alim Ozturk, Elliot Embleton, Lynden Gooch and Charlie Wyke are all ruled out through injury.
