Go ahead given to convert vacant Shotts shops into new homes

Council planners have given the go ahead to turn vacant shops in Shotts into new homes.

The proposals will see the conversion of two vacant ground floor shop units into ground floor one-bedroom flats.

The new homes on Main Street were given the green light by North Lanarkshire Council planning officials.

The council report states: “There are no additional material considerations to be taken into account that determines that the development plan should not prevail, the proposed development is considered consistent with planning policies and should be approved with conditions.”

Some objections were received, with concerns regarding the siting of additional bins within the communal area to the rear of the properties and the lack of parking.

The report adds: “Whilst the objector’s concern regarding the siting of additional bins within the communal area are important, it is considered that there is sufficient outdoor space associated with the development for refuse bins and any impact on neighbouring bin or vehicle access would not be so significant that it would warrant a refusal in this case.

“Whilst concerns regarding the lack of parking and the proposed use of on street parking have been raised by objectors, the lack of off-street parking is considered acceptable given the location of the site within the existing local centre and given that there is on street parking available on Main Street.

“With regards to concerns of the blocking of private driveway/access, it is the responsibility of vehicle users to ensure that access is not blocked, and vehicles are parked legally.”
