GMP statement as man's body winched from Manchester home after he's found dead

Police have confirmed a man in his 50s has died in Moss Side, after neighbours spotted a body being winched from a window.

Emergency services were called yesterday afternoon (May 9) to the property on Crondall Street. It’s thought that the body could only be removed from the house through the window due to a large amount of items ‘hoarded’ inside.

Now, police have sadly confirmed that a man has died. A spokesperson said: “Officers were called to a report of a concern for the welfare of a man at an address on Crondall Street in Manchester just after 9.40pm last night (9 May 2022).

“Emergency services attended and a man in his 50s was pronounced dead at the scene. There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances and a report is being prepared for HM Coroner.”

After the incident, neighbours spoke of their shock at seeing the emergency operations unfold and the discovery. One resident said: “It was a man who lives there, he always kept himself to himself. I don't know his name or anything about him, but he was very quiet. Me and my partner had noticed a bad smell coming from our upstairs room in the past week.

"We haven't seen him for at least a week or heard anything at all. It was still a shock when we saw what was happening, as you don't expect it to happen where you live."

Another eyewitness added: “We just looked out of the window and saw all the police and fire crews. I leaned out and saw them using a crane from a fire engine to gain access to the property and lift out the body bag. I don't know the person who lives there, but couldn't believe it when we saw what was happening."

Yesterday, a statement from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “GMFRS have spent approximately three hours this evening supporting colleagues from Greater Manchester Police at an address on Crondall Street, Manchester. There is no risk to people or properties in the local area and the incident is now coming to a close.”
