GMP drop investigation into allegations of racist abuse at Oldham Athletic FC

Police have said they are no longer investigating alleged racist comments made towards a club director at Oldham Athletic during a match over the summer.

The football club said in July that racist comments were made towards one of the club's directors during a game against Ashton United at Hurst Cross stadium in Ashton-under-Lyne.

At the time, the club said it was working alongside Greater Manchester Police, who were investigating the incident.

In an update into the investigation, GMP have said that no further action will be taken.

Police added that there was ‘insufficient evidence’ to corroborate the reports.

In a statement, a spokesperson for GMP said: “Following an incident that occurred on Saturday 10 July 2021, police launched an investigation into a report of racism towards a member of staff at Oldham Athletic.

“Enquiries were made, however, there was insufficient evidence to corroborate the report.

“The case is no longer ongoing.”

Oldham Athletic have been reached for comment.
