GMB viewers slam hosts over Tony Blair jibes as he cuts off long hair after insults

Many Brits were left stunned by a recent TV appearance by former Prime Minister and Labour leader Tony Blair, as he showed off a longer hairdo.

But any fans of the new look will be disappointed to learn he has cut it all off, and is back to his usual shorter do.

It caused quite the frenzy when Blair sported longer locks after a transformation in lockdown during a TV interview, no doubt as a result of hairdressers closing.

But now, appearing on Good Morning Britain, Blair revealed he's had it all chopped off due to barbers being back up and running.

He also shared his shock over the whole scenario and reaction, stunned to learn people were more focused on his hair than his politics - with him called all sorts of names over it.

Blair told hosts Susanna and Alastair how he learned from his team that there was more internet searches regarding his longer hair than other things he was doing over the past year.

Admitting he found this "depressing", he explained his reason for having a trim.

Asked about the hype over his hair, Alastair mocked his pal and former colleague's look - something viewers were not on board with.

He questioned: "We've done many events together, I've always defended you... can you explain to me how you allowed yourself to do a television interview looking like Alvin Stardust or Gerry Francis."

Susanna Reid then joked he looked like Lord of the Rings' Gandalf, with Tony admitting people had said worse.

Blair revealed: "Well Gandalf is better than some of the things that I've been called as a result there. Look, it was lockdown, it's done, it's over."

Susanna then quipped: "I'd just like to point out that the interview was done after hairdressers were opened..."

Tony replied: "I know, it took me some time to get organised but the thing that is interesting and depressing about politics is my institute over the last 12 months has done all this stuff around vaccines and all of that.

"Literally when I said to my people, 'what have we received the most traffic about in the last year?' they said, 'actually, your hair'."

Susanna quickly replied: "Welcome to being a woman on television because what you look like, what you wear and what your hair looks like will probably be the main thing you get traffic about."

Some GMB viewers seemed gutted by his latest makeover, while others hit out at the show for mocking his appearance.

One viewer wrote: "I've never been a fan of Tony Blair, but seriously @GMB, attacking his lockdown hair before you've barely said hi?! For one, his hair actually looked pretty cool. You've gotten rid of Piers Morgan, kick the unnecessary nastiness out with him."

Another agreed: "Now going on about image and looks which I thought gmb were against! Blair’s hair! So what."

A third added: "@GMB are you really allowing presenters to talk about someone's bloody hair instead of what they were actually coming on the show for not only that you are also allowing them to take the p**s out of it!"

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
