GMB viewers praise Army 'hero' as he recalls burying soldiers in Afghanistan

Good Morning Britain viewers were in awe of a former Army Sergeant who appeared on the ITV show on Thursday.

Colour Sergeant Brian Wood MC is a former soldier in the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment who was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in the Battle of Danny Boy.

He joined Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid in the studio to mark the 20th anniversary of the start of UK military operations in Afghanistan.

Speaking about his time serving there, Sergeant Wood said "My tour in Afghanistan I will reflect on with pride.

"One of their main efforts was to try and build a school, we managed to push back the Taliban.

"We managed to witness 140 school children going through the school gates and being educated. That, for me, was the takeaway points and the memories I will cherish."

He continued: "The Taliban were always around the corner and they were very good at what they did. The ultimate sacrifice was made by British soldiers."

Susanna then commented: "You're doing something very special aren't you on the 1st of next month because you want to pay a personal tribute to the fallen of Afghanistan and Iraq?"

Sergeant Wood replied: "Yeah so 1st of November I'm gonna set out to run a mile for each individual that's lost their lives during the Iraq and Afghanistan campaign, which is 635.

"And I'm gonna be running 26 miles each day for 25 consecutive days. I'll be representing each individual on my T-shirt each day and I just think I've got a duty to give something back to those who have given us everything."

He continued: "I personally laid two fellow soldiers to rest, I lowered them both into the ground.

"I never thought for one minute I would be rolling out the Union Jack into a triangle to then hand over to their parents."

Referring to the current situation, Sergeant Wood added: "I can't control wants happening now. I can't control that the Taliban are in power. It's a hard pill to swallow, and huge amounts of emotion."

Good Morning Britain viewers were in awe of him and took to Twitter to comment.

"What an inspirational man sergeant Brian Wood is, good luck 2 him #gmb," one person tweeted.
