GMB viewers fume as hosts interrupt debate to show new John Lewis Christmas ad

Good Morning Britain viewers were left angry after the show's hosts cut off a debate to play the new John Lewis Christmas advert.

Presenters Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard were talking to Sonia Sodha about Conservative MP Owen Paterson, who had been facing a suspension from the Commons for 30 days after breaching lobbying rules because of his paid consultancy work.

But as she spoke, Kate interjected and "paused" the conversation as she revealed the festive ad had launched and they wanted to play it for their viewers.

"I'm only going to pause you there because I've just heard the exciting news that the John Lewis Christmas ad has landed," she said, with the camera switching back to Kate and Ben in the studio.

She added: "Can we see the advert? Can we sneak it in before we have to go for a break?

"Come on let's have a look. Here's a first glimpse."

A short clip of the advert then played but fans were left annoyed that the debate had been stopped to discuss the ad.

One viewer wrote on Twitter : "Well what was that #gmb decided that they’d had enough of discussing serious corruption in our political system and they needed to suddenly deviate to show 10 seconds of the John Lewis Christmas ad."

"At the forefront of news coverage here... Stop the discussion of Owen Paterson scandal the John Lewis advert is here," another viewer added.

A third wrote: "Well that was #gmb deciding that they’d had enough of discussing serious corruption in our political system and they needed to suddenly deviate to show 10 seconds of the John Lewis Christmas ad."

One viewer said it would be the last time they'd be watching the ITV breakfast show.

"That is the last time I will ever watch GMB. Political debate is more important than a stupid Christmas advert. I will now be watching BBC Breakfast," they said.

The new John Lewis Christmas advert follows the story of young Nathan, who meets alien Skye and wants to show her the full magic of her first Christmas. He watches festive movies with her, they eat mince pies and play in the snow together.

When it comes the time for Skye to return to her home planet, there is a poignant moment between her and Nathan as he gifts her his Christmas jumper. In her final moments on earth, Skye lights the star on top of the Christmas tree.
