GMB's Susanna Reid's jibe at co-host Alastair Campbell's popularity

Susanna Reid made a light-hearted jibe at co-host Alastair Campbell’s popularity on the ITV morning show.

The former political spin doctor is helping present GMB as part of Mental Health Awareness Week, as he is a long-standing campaigner on the issue.

Speaking about his regular cold water early morning swims, Alastair said he had managed to get one in at 3am today (Tuesday).

He told viewers: “I got there at 3am, it was 14C and I was the only person in the pool.”

To which Susanna replied: “That’s how popular you were yesterday morning.”

Alastair laughed and said 'thank you'.

Yesterday, there had been reports that viewers had turned over the programme because of Alastair presenting.

One person said on twitter yesterday: "Alastair Campbell has been on just over 10 mins and I can already say I’m not a fan #gmb."

Another said: "@campbellclaret Good morning Alastair you’re doing a brilliant & wonderful job presenting #GMB @GMB with @susannareid100 at least you let the guests answer your questions you’re better than Piers Morgan!!!"

He is in the chair next to Susanna until tomorrow to raise awareness about mental health issues, as he has spoken and written often of his own depression.

Alastair, 63, was in a good mood as his team, Burnley FC, avoided relegation from the Premier League with victory over Fulham.

This meant he was wearing the same tie as yesterday as part of a long-standing ritual after his team wins.

Susanna said: “You know what, if Charlotte [Hawkins, fellow presenter] or I wore the same dress two days in a row there would be complaints.”

Is Alastair doing a good job? Is he better than Piers Morgan? Let us know in the comments below.
