GMB's Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley reach out to George Alagiah after sad cancer news

Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid and Richard Madeley have reached out to BBC news star George Alagiah after it was revealed that his cancer has spread.

It was back in 2014 that 6 o'clock news presenter George was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer. After taking a break from work to have extensive treatment, George delighted viewers by returning to our screens, before being dealt a huge blow when the cancer returned in 2017.

And now, after he was forced to step back from his work last year after contracting coranvirus, a representative for George confirmed that the cancer has now spread, with the host first being told the heartbreaking news last year.

The statement read: "In a letter to colleagues in the newsroom Mr Alagiah said his medical team had decided to hit the new tumour 'hard and fast'.

"He is due to undergo a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy over the next few months."

In the letter to his co-stars at the BBC, George said that being at work had 'kept him sane,' adding that he was 'determined to come back' and, reacting to his powerful words, Susanna offered her best wishes as Richard reacted: "You have to say, on camera, you wouldn't think he was battling a serious illness.

"He looks fantastic on camera and he's totally on top of his game in his interviews. We wish him the very best and see you back really soon."

Fans have also sent their support to George, with one tweeting: "So sad to hear that George Alagiah’s bowel cancer has returned and he will be receiving further treatment. Wishing you a full recovery, George."

On hearing the sad news, another posted: "wishing George Alagiah a speedy recovery. Hope to see you back "on the box" soon.
