GMB's Richard Madeley defends Liverpool fans amid Champions League chaos

Richard Madeley said the way that French police treated Liverpool fans at the Champions League match was "disgraceful."

Jimmy Tarbuck, an LFC superfan and comedian, appeared on GMB to chat to hosts Richard and Charlotte Hawkins about what went on before and after the League's final match between LFC and Real Madrid. GMB had been showing images from the chaos that ensued in Paris, showing Liverpool fans being treated aggressively by French police.

Jimmy said: " UEFA have got a lot to answer for for this." Richard added: "And I have to say so do the French police."

He continued: "I mean their violence towards completely law abiding Liverpool fans who were doing nothing wrong, we've been showing you pictures all morning. There's basically French guards going up to them, just strolling up to them and spraying them in the face with pepper spray and with mace. It's disgraceful isn't it?"

Jimmy said: "Well Richard we see these pictures that you give us. Some of them are kids - nine year olds - being sprayed by the French police. I mean how dare they? Why do you have the final of this competition there?" Richard said: "Hopefully we will get answers."

Chris Philip, MP, later appeared on the show to talk about the latest headlines. Charlotte Hawkins explained to him that France's Sports Minister has been trying to pass the blame onto Liverpool fans without tickets to the game.

She said: "Don't we need to take a stronger line here to stop Liverpool fans getting the blame for what happened here?". Mr Philip replied: "Yes, well I seen pictures which quite clearly show children who are fans and disabled fans getting pepper sprayed which obviously is not consistent with what the French minister just said.

"But in order to really get to the bottom of this we do need that proper investigation. Nothing I've seen on these videos suggests that the fans I've seen depicted in any way deserve to get treated the way that they did. As a Palace fan we're going to stand with fellow fans and defend them if they're accused of things that aren't true.

"Anyway, the only real way of understanding what is going on is to get a full investigation done by UEFA urgently."
