GMB's Richard Madeley clashes with Susanna Reid over 'nonsense' M25 climate protests

Things got heated on Wednesday's episode of Good Morning Britain as hosts Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid clashed over protest laws.

During the show the duo discussed the ongoing climate protests on the M25, after it was reported that 23 individuals had been arrested for causing disruption on the motorway again.

Richard struggled to contain his anger as they began to show footage of the protests - which you can watch in the video above .

"I said this last week, we do need on this show a silver bell which we can, from time-to-time and not that often, that we can ring on days of good news." He told viewers.

While referring to the government now seeking a court injunction to stop environmental activists from shutting down the M25, he added: "Because at flipping last, the Government have got a grip, finally got a grip on Insulate Britain, on these mad protesters on the M25. They've upped their game finally."

"Okay, you think this is good news?" Susanna asked, before Richard hit back with: "Of course it's good news, Susanna! You must think that?"

Challenging him, Susanna said: "No, I'll tell you something It's all very well right at the moment when these protesters are extremely unpopular outside of those people who support their cause, but what happens if it's a cause that you believe in?"

"Easy peasy answer to that Susanna!" He replied. "If it's used against a cause where the protesters are blatantly breaking the law, then we deserve to be injunctioned."

Susanna then went on to say: "We already have a law that they're breaking so why does the Home Secretary need new powers?"

Visibly passionate about the matter, Richard shot back: "Because the current law clearly isn't tough enough to keep them in jail."

"Is it right to send someone to prison for peacefully protesting?" Susanna asked.

Richard quipped: "They're not peacefully protesting, they're dangerously protesting!"

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV
