GMB's Ranvir Singh raises staycation fears over Covid as Cornwall has 'more infections' than Turkey

Ranvir Singh was left concerned by the alarming rise in Cornwall's Covid infection rates just as she plans a staycation there for Bank Holiday.

Like many other Brits, Good Morning Britain host Ranvir is planning a break for August Bank Holiday, with the famous seaside destination on her to do list for the coming week, after she'd been forced to postpone the trip a number of times due to the pandemic.

But, a day after GMB discussed reports that Covid vaccine protection could wane after just six months, the show's resident medic, Doctor Hilary Jones, said that excursions and events on UK soil are playing a role in the sharp increase in infections over the past month.

Just this week, it was confirmed that well over 4,000 new Covid cases had been linked to the recent Boardmasters festival in Newquay.

And. on the same day that the Government's revised travel lists are set to be published, Ranvir's GMB co-host Charlotte Hawkins, told her that Cornwall currently had 'more Covid infections' than Turkey, which is currently on the red list.

Looking at the information in front of her, Charlotte told her: "Ranvir I know you're off to Cornwall aren't you? to which Ranvir replied: "Yeah, well I hope there's no traffic light system for Cornwall!"

Charlotte continued: "We were just looking at the numbers at the moment and Turkey is on the red list and has got 162 cases per 100,000; Cornwall has 771 cases per 100,000....so if Cornwall was a country it would be on the red list."

Taking in what Charlotte just said, Ranvir turned to Dr Hilary and said: "It's kind of worrying I have to say. I was booked in - I know the Cornish Tourist Board have said don't come unless you're booked - this is a holiday from April last year, moved to June...you know cancel, cancel, cancel and now I've got it next week."

Delivering some harsh truths to her, Dr Hilary replied: "The number of cases they have has doubled in a week. Similar situation in Cumbria," to which Ranvir asked: "It's the holiday destinations isn't it?"

Dr Hilary then told her: "Tourism is undoubtedly part of the problem. "
