GMB's Piers Morgan slams test and trace as 'a shambles'

Piers Morgan has slammed the government's test and trace system as "a shambles" - but Matt Hancock has defended it as "excellent", despite growing criticism.

The Health Secretary said problems with testing capacity have been caused by people without coronavirus symptoms requesting tests.

Questioned over whether the system was failing, he told Sky News: "I completely reject the accusation, in fact quite the contrary."

He said the UK has the biggest system per capita in Europe and the highest testing capacity "we've ever had".

Mr Hancock added: "However in the last couple of weeks we've seen an increase in demand, including an increase in demand from people who are not eligible for tests, people who don't have symptoms.

"We've seen an increase of about 25% of people who are coming forward that don't have symptoms and aren't eligible."

On Good Morning Britain, presenter Piers Morgan slammed the Health Secretary's comments.

He said: "Of course it's our fault."

The presenter added: "It's constant mixed messaging."

Later, he went on to say: "This world class system is a shambles. It's a disgrace... it's never their fault... it's always somebody else's fault."

It has been 144 days since a member of Cabinet has appeared on the popular breakfast show after an apparent boycott.

Guest Steve Hynd appeared via video link on the show to detail his experience after being turned away from a COVID test appointment after a two hour drive to a testing centre with his young children.

Steve's dad sadly died in May, with Covid-19 being a contradictory factor to his death.

The dad-of-two called the track and trace system "incompetent" and urged the government to offer "clear" instructions.

Following his dad's death, he wanted to ensure he was vigilant when it comes to testing.

He said: "I would encourage people to go and get tested if they have symptoms, if they are worried... ultimately, ministers need to accept responsibility."

He added: "It's just not good enough."

GMB co-host Susanna Reid said she found it "extraordinary" that Matt Hancock was "blaming people" regarding testing.

Piers Morgan said: "We will continue to hold this government to account."
