GMB's Kate Garraway hopes husband's Covid story doesn't "scare people"

Kate Garraway says she hopes an upcoming documentary about her husband Derek Draper and his struggle with coronavirus doesn't "scare" people.

On Thursday's edition of Good Morning Britain, presenter Kate said: "This is something I started making in August, obviously then rather hoping that Derek and I would be chatting to you together and that more recovery would be possible. That hasn't been the case.

"It's looking at not just what’s happened to my family but also to other families and the very, very long tail that Covid has. Obviously Derek is one example and we don't want to scare people with what he's been through but there are many other people that have got versions of it and still not enough is known about the impact of it."

Derek, who is 53 years old, has been in hospital with Covid-19 since March 30 last year. He was placed into an induced coma and placed on a ventilator, and nearly a year later he remains in intensive care.

Kate used an interview with The Times to speak about Derek's struggles. She said doctors repeatedly told her: "Prepare yourself, he's going to die."

Derek has lost eight stone, has holes in his lungs, and has experienced a stopped heart and failed kidneys, and his liver and pancreas were damaged.

Kate says her husband recovered a little towards the end of 2020 - he only needed breathing assistance at night, could swallow, and was capable of short conversations - but his condition has since deteriorated once again.

Kate Garraway: Finding Derek airs on ITV1 at 9pm on Tuesday, March 23.
