GMB's Kate Garraway gutted as 'Covid rules' ruin bizarre request to Team GB Olympians

Kate Garraway was left gutted on Wednesday's Good Morning Britain after 'Covid rules' ruined a bizarre request she had for Team GB Olympians Emily Campbell and Galal Yafai.

Kate and co-host Ben Shephard were joined in the GMB studio by gold medal winning boxer Galal and Emily, who won a silver in the weight-lifting, as both returned home from Tokyo to a hero's welcome.

The two were quizzed on what is next for them, with Galal admitting he had his sights firmly set on turning professional, while Emily said she was looking ahead to next year's Commonwealth Games and then to the Paris Olympics in 2024.

Emily lifted 161kg to clinch silver, with Kate musing: "That is three times Galal's weight!"

She added: "You could potentially lift three Galals?"

Ben then joked: "Lifting a Galal would just be a warm up test for you?" to which Emily replied: "Yeah it would just be my starting warm up weight."

As the interview ended and Ben got Galal to hold up his gold medal as the camera zoomed in, Kate addressed Emily to say: "I'm so desperate Emily for you to lift Galal but I suspect we've got Covid rules where you can't," as a rather bemused Emily replied: "Yeah."

Ben quipped: "They're in Covid safe outfits though....they're wipe clean," before backtracking and adding, "Yeah, maybe not."

Last week, presenters Ben and Kate were caught up in some unfolding Olympic drama involving eventual gold medallists Hannah Mills and Eilidh McIntyre in the sailing.

The pair thought they had definitely secured first place in the women's 470 class, only for there to be, in Ben's words, "some drama off the water."

Kate explained: "The French team lodged an official protest after the race against the British for blocking, which threatened the gold medal.

"So the result was in doubt, but we've just heard the officials have dismissed the protest so the gold medal stands."
