GMB's Kate Garraway gives Derek Draper update as she asks Dr Hilary how she can 'do the right thing'

Kate Garraway has offered an update on her husband Derek Draper's condition as he continues his recovery from coronavirus battle.

Former lobbyist and political adviser Derek, 53, is now free of Covid-19, but remains seriously ill after the virus "wreaked havoc" on his body - with medics unable to say if, or when, he will recover.

Speaking on Thursday's Good Morning Britain, co-host Susanna Reid asked Kate how Derek was.

Kate said: "There are big ups and big downs, not big ups really, small improvements and worrying downs as well.

"But the last few days have been pretty stable, so keeping everything crossed really."

She also emotionally spoke about how hospital restrictions have meant that the couple's children - Darcey and Billy - haven't seen their dad for month, nor have his parents who may be struck by new restrictions in Lancashire.

Kate went on to ask GMB's Dr Hilary Jones for some advice for half term as she expressed concerned about the mental health of her Darcy, 14, and Billy, 11.

Kate was presenting GMB with Susanna Reid when she was asked about Derek (ITV)

Speaking directly to the GP, the 53-year-old said: "Can I ask you a personal question Hilary? With the looming half term, with the desire by everyone to do the right thing, I desperately want to do the right thing," Kate began.

"With half term coming up, we are trying to work out as a family what I can do for the children."

She added: "I have been in a very strange place, and what they could probably do with is a little bit of fun over half term, out of the house."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV from 6am.
