GMB's Kate Garraway backs Alison Hammond to finally stop Ant and Dec's NTA win record

Kate Garraway has thrown her support behind Alison Hammond to win the National Television Award for best presenter, ending Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly’s impressive run.

Over the years, the Geordie duo have become familiar faces at the NTAs and never leave the star-studded event empty-handed.

All in all, Ant and Dec have bagged an astonishing 43 National Television Awards in total so far and usually share the gong for Best Presenter.

However, Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway has said she is cheering on This Morning presenter Alison Hammond, who is up alongside the I’m a Celebrity hosts in the category.

Speaking ahead of the event on Thursday, Kate said: “Alison Hammond might be in with a shout. I’ve just been on a DNA Journey with Alison. She’s huge fun and absolutely brilliant.

“I got to know her very well. I love Ant and Dec – we all love Ant and Dec – but if it isn’t them, I would love it to be Alison Hammond.”

Host Ben Shephard replied: “Wouldn't that be fabulous?” as Susanna Reid said: “It’s been them every single year.”

Kate agreed, replying: “They’ve had a run,” to which Susanna said: “I can imagine Ant and Dec even thinking it’s time for someone other than Ant and Dec. Maybe it is Alison Hammond’s year.”

Whatever the result, Ant and Dec have confirmed they unfortunately will not be in attendance at the awards ceremony hosted by Joel Dommett.

The pair confirmed they have tested positive for coronavirus, sharing the news with disappointed fans.

Taking to Twitter, the pair wrote: “Sadly, it’s true… We even get ill together! After feeling unwell a few days ago we both tested and we’re positive for Covid.

“We’re resting up at home and are so sorry we can’t be at NTAs 2022. Best of luck everyone and get well soon to anyone else in the same boat x.”

The pair posted dual shots of their positive coronavirus tests as they will also be forced to miss a Britain’s Got Talent special.

ITV had announced the new spin off on Monday writing online: "Over the past 16 years, we’ve witnessed some of the most mesmerising and spellbinding magical acts take to the Britain’s Got Talent stage.

"Now, they’ll go head-to-head with some of the world’s most talented magicians in Britain’s Got Talent: The Ultimate Magician."

A Britain's Got Talent Spokesperson subsequently confirmed: "Ant and Dec are both unwell and have postponed all work commitments until they recover. Sadly, this means they were unable to film Britain’s Got Talent: The Ultimate Magician."
