Speaking to hosts Adil Ray and Charlotte Hawkins, Dr Jarvis gave her advice as the virus continues to spread.

She said: "People die from coronavirus for four separate reasons: one - people die from coronavirus, particularly older people, people with other health conditions.

"Secondly, people die if the hospital is overstretched and they do not receive the treatment they require.

"Thirdly, people die if their other treatments are being delayed and fourthly, people die from deprivation."

Dr Jarvis also made an urgent plea on the show, saying: "If you get any symptoms, at the moment we have fever, a continuous cough, or a loss of taste or smell, get tested. Please do not wait.

"We are now in a position where over 99 per cent of people are getting results back in a day from a drive-in centre. It is a bit longer if you send off for one in the post, not surprisingly."

She continued: "But you know, get yourself tested and please self-isolate until you get those results."

GMB continues weekdays on ITV at 6am
