GMB's Dr Hilary warns coronavirus 'isn't going to go away' as more vaccines ordered

Good Morning Britain's Dr Hilary has warned the public they should remain vigilant because coronavirus is not going away.

Dr Hilary spoke on the ITV show this morning, after news that the UK has ordered 60 million more vaccine doses for a booster jab in the Autumn period.

He said: "I think that covid-19 isn't going away, it's going to be a bit like the flu where we have an annual jab for that and don't think twice about it and I think this will be similar.

" Covid-19 is a much worse infection than influenza afterall.

"We've had a lot of good news about the pandemic this week in this country, not so in the rest of the world and what happens in the rest of the world will happen here, so that's why we need to be vigilant."

In the past week Nepal and the Philippines have imposed lockdowns again, while the situation in India is catastrophic.

The country has now reported more than 18.3 million cases, behind only the United States.

The health ministry also reported 3,645 deaths in the last 24-hour period, bringing India's total to 204,832, according to the health ministry.

Experts believe both figures are an undercount, but it is unclear by how much.

India has set a global record for daily new cases for seven of the past eight days.

The recent surge has been partly fed by new variants of the coronavirus, mass public gatherings such as political rallies and religious events that were allowed to continue, and relaxed attitudes on the risks fed by leaders touting victory over the virus.

With the country's healthcare system collapsing under the record surge, help has also come from overseas.

On Wednesday, the United States sent the first of several Covid-19 medical shipments to India.

The UK sent a shipment earlier this week while others like France, Germany, Ireland and Australia have also promised help.
