GMB's Dr Hilary says there is no known vaccine risk for breastfeeding women

Good Morning Britain 's Dr Hilary Jones has explained there is no known risk of the Covid vaccine to breastfeeding women, but there is a lack of data about it.

The regulations recently changed, from telling breastfeeding women not to get the vaccine, to telling them they should get it if they are a frontline worker.

Speaking to GMB host Charlotte Hawkins, Dr Hilary said: "The regulations have changed on this in the last few days, Covid-19 vaccines are not thought to be a risk to the breastfeeding infant, and because of that, the JCVI [The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation] has recommended that the vaccine can be received whilst breastfeeding.

"On Friday, I heard from groups representing lactating mothers that the previous advice from the MHRA [Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency] was over-precautionary, and was denying lactating mothers the right to have a vaccine, or the advice to have one.

"So there are about 20,000 women who might be breastfeeding who work in health and social care.

"The advice now is this, there is no known risk of giving these vaccines to breastfeeding women.

"Breastfeeding women should therefore be offered a vaccine if they're eligible otherwise, for example if they are front line health and social care workers and work in residential homes.

"Women should be advised, however, that there is lack of safety data for these specific vaccinations in breastfeeding and they should speak to their healthcare professional about the benefit risk ratio, before going ahead," he concluded.

Dr Hilary also said he believes the current lockdown measures are not doing enough to stop the spread of coronavirus.

He spoke to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid amid the news the government is considering tightening the restrictions, including scrapping support bubbles and enforcing face coverings worn outside.

He believes all non-essential workplaces should close and people should be cracked down on for exercising with partners and bending the rules in other small ways.

He also said it might be necessary to ban sports games as well, after alarming footage showed crowds arriving to greet Tottenham Hotspur team coach at Marine AFC in Merseyside on Sunday.
