GMB's Dr Hilary reveals how your blood type could show how at risk you might be to Covid-19

Dr Hilary Jones has explained how your blood type could reveal how at risk you might be from Covid-19.

Appearing on ITV's Good Morning Britain earlier today, the medical expert discussed the latest coronavirus crisis headlines with hosts Shephard and Ranvir Singh.

During their discussion, Dr Hilary began speculating how blood groups could hint how impacted people could be by the deadly virus.

He mentioned how blood group A could be more susceptible to the virus with potentially more sever symptoms, compared to those of blood group O.

"What about genetics? So, this idea that if you are blood group A, you are more likely to need oxygen and ventilation and have more severe symptoms, is interesting." He said.

"If you are blood group O you are relatively more protected - that is 44 per cent of the population - and will have less severe symptoms.

"Blood group A is 42 per cent of the population and they might be vulnerable."

He continued: "It is interesting. We do not know if it is true because we have not had a cohort of people to study who have less severe symptoms, to compare to the group who have had more severe symptoms.

So we need to do that."

He added: "We do not know whether it is the blood itself that is the factor, or whether it is the genes which determine the blood type which also have other effects on the body."
