GMB's Dr Hilary Jones shares tips on sleeping during UK heatwave

Dr Hilary Jones has offered advice to those struggling to sleep during the heatwave in the UK.

The TV doctor appeared on Good Morning Britain today as he shared tips for viewers having a tough time nodding off.

Joining Lorraine Kelly, he gave viewers his first piece of advice - to ditch the duvet.

"Shed your duvet because it’s too hot, just use the cover of the duvet or a bed sheet – that’s one way of cooling," he said.

Dr Hilary also suggested using a cold water bottle.

"You can use a cold water bottle too, fill it with cold water, or it can just be a bottle that you put in the fridge or freezer."

An unusual technique, he also revealed, was putting your pillow in the freezer.

"You can put your pillow in the freezer, you can also put water on your sheets because it’s cooling when it evaporates," he said.

Dr Hilary suggested that if there is a fan nearby "dangle an ice packet in front of it, so it’s giving out cooling air"

He also warned viewers not to flock to packed beaches in the hot weather, or abandon social distancing and coronavirus lockdown rules.

He addressed the severe consequences of Covid-19, especially on those above the age of 50, and his fear that cases could increase again if people were to get "complacent".

Brighton beach was just one that was absolutely packed in the sunshine this week, as goers enjoyed the UK heatwave.

Telling GMB hosts Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid that people are abandoning the rules, he warned it could lead to a repeat of April when cases and even deaths from the virus soared above 1,000.

Hilary advised those watching and those heading out to stick to the rules, in fear that the infection rate and the R number will rise as a result.

He explained, after talk of the daily death rate and case rate reportedly dropping: "That's because lockdown has been successful.

"We are still seeing nearly 5,000 confirmed new cases a day after testing.

"If anyone could be a fly on the wall in critical care or in intensive care right now they would still see hundreds of people on ventilators and still being admitted to hospital."

He went on: "What we don’t want to see is the prevalence rise and the R number go up, and hospital admissions rise again."
