GMB's Dr Hilary Jones issues stark warning over foreign holidays and air travel

Good Morning Britain doctor Hilary Jones urged caution on the show on Tuesday, as questions remained over whether international holidays would and should be allowed.

Many people in the UK are hoping to book foreign holidays this summer, amid differing comments on what coronavirus measures, including social distancing, will be in place later in the year.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has yet to officially state whether foreign travel will be permitted for holidays, and when this could happen.

The discovery of new Covid-19 strains in the UK and from across the world have only sparked more concern over whether international travel should be allowed - amid fears the strains may be resistant to the vaccine being rolled out across the UK.

Boris is said to have urged caution over foreign travel, amid talks some travel will be allowed from May 17.

But ahead of complete confirmation, and with it still not known if certain strains of the virus will be resistant to the vaccine, Dr Hilary had his say and urged caution - especially over air travel.

Like previous shows of GMB, Hilary shared his concerns about foreign holidays being allowed when there is still so much to learn about the virus and the new strains.

Focusing on his thoughts about air travel and how it impacted coronavirus transmission in the first place, he said: "Air travel is what brought the virus to the UK and took it around the world.

"We just need to be really cautious and people want to think the pandemic is already over, and it isn’t.

"It’s still raging in parts of the world and as it rages new variants will be created and they can be brought here very quickly and may not be susceptible to the vaccine."

He went on: "Everyone wants to go on holiday, I want to go on holiday, but I think it’s right that people are expressing caution and not rushing out of a pandemic too quickly because we don’t want to be back in a situation we were in before."

Speaking of India being in a "desperate state" following a rapid surge in cases and fatalities in a devastating second wave, he warned the UK needed to avoid a similar event.

Hilary also suggested it would be a "big mistake" to not consider the risks of lifting restrictions to early.
