Good Morning Britain 's Dr Hilary Jones issued a harrowing warning as a new scam targets the most vulnerable people in society.
Speaking to hosts Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard, Dr Hilary said it was "disgusting" people were posing as vaccination centres and taking advantage of people's desperation to get the Covid vaccine.
People have reportedly been asked for their bank details and handed them over, believing it was genuinely their GP surgery.
Dr Hilary said: "We need to be much more punitive to the scammers who are scamming the most vulnerable people in our society, pretending they are representing vaccination centres.
"Asking for their bank details - never ever give your bank details."
Ben clarified: "You're not going to get a phone call about this, it will be more official, it will be a letter, it will come from a source that you know, so your local GP.
"That's the fear isn't it, someone gets a call saying, 'We need your bank details, we need some personal details'."
Kate remarked: "People are so desperate to have it done."
Dr Hilary agreed: "You won't be asked for any financial details at all, it will be based on your medical notes and records, you will be hearing from somebody you recognise.
"But just be cautious, and let's crack down on these scammers, because they are disgusting."
Dr Hilary also said despite concerns the country is rolling out the vaccine too slowly, we are "doing pretty well" and at a much faster rate than, for example, France.
He explained: "The vaccine that we have had so far, the Pfeizer vaccine, is so difficult to store at -70 degrees, that it is distributed to certain places where they can refrigerate it and canroll it out in hospital areas where people can visit.
"Some people have been lucky enough to get the first batch of the Oxford vaccine and that will be happening more and more this week.
"GPs will be able to access the vaccine which is easier to store and they will be gong to care homes.
"Only 20% of people in care homes have it right now but it will change and they will have the vaccine it due course, we are doing pretty well."
