GMB's Dr Hilary explains how certain insect repellent can kill Covid-19 as it 'flies off shelves'

Good Morning Britain's resident medical expert Dr Hilary Jones claimed an insect repellent can kill COVID-19 on Thursday morning's show.

Speaking alongside hosts Ranvir Singh and Sean Fletcher, Dr Hilary explained how an ingredient in products including MosiGuard called Citriodal is key to fighting the deadly virus - as shown in the video above.

It is reported the military have been using the spray to kill off the virus and while is should not replace face coverings, social distancing and hand washing, the TV doctor did say it will offer another layer of protection.

MosiGuard is already "flying off the shelves" but Dr Hilary warned more research is still needed.

"The military have been using this in addition to other PPE, visors and masks for example," said Hilary.

"The researchers at the military facility in Porton Down, where they do all the important microbiology research work, have found that you can use this, put the droplet with viruses and it will kill something like 100,000 viruses within one minute, and only ten remain."

If the spray does work it will only last for a matter of hours and there's a chance it could irritate some people's skin.

"It's not something you can take externally, it's something that you can spray on, it's a protective, Hilary said.

"It would work for a few hours as a barrier it would kill off some virus.

"It's certainly not something you'd say, 'I've got that on, I don't need to use anything else'."
