GMB's Dr Hilary brands 1% pay rise for nurses ‘disgusting’ and ‘slap in the face’

Good Morning Britain 's Dr Hilary Jones has hit out at the 1% pay rise for nurses announced by the government, branding it a "slap in the face".

Speaking to Lorraine Kelly, Dr Hilary said: "It makes me incensed when we hear about just a 1% pay rise for nurses being proposed, all that work still has to go on, all that cancer work.

"We need to encourage nurses to come into the profession, we have got a recruitment crisis, and they are thinking, 'If I am not rewarded, why would you want to be a nurse?'

"How can they justify some consultants earning a £1,000 a day when they can't give a nurse £3.50 a week?"

He added: "Sorry, I am a little bit disgusted with that."

The GP also spoke about the issue earlier on in the morning on GMB, when he said: "This 1% makes me very cross, really cross.

"It amounts to £3.50 per week for the average nurse, it's a slap in the face, after all they have done, they have lost about 950 people, who have lost their lives looking after people with Covid in hospitals.

"For a lifetime peer, a hereditary peer, to say, 'They are well paid, they have job security, what are they complaining about?'

"Job security in civil service and Government is far greater than any job security in the NHS. They work all hours, often unpaid. One per cent is an insult."

Lorraine also revealed she was subjected to trolling when she posted on social media about receiving the Covid vaccine.

"I couldn't believe some of the comments I got, there are some seriously stupid people out there," she said.

"There are people out there who have got concerns, but having concerns is different to telling me I am going to die because I got the vaccine."

Dr Hilary replied: "There are some ill-informed people, and there are some downright fantasists out there, people who think the vaccine contains nanoparticles that control what you do, it is beyond comprehension.

"It's a very safe vaccine and an effective vaccine - 23 million people have been vaccinated and had no major side effects, it's a major triumph, it really is."

* Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV at 9am
