GMB's Ben Shephard says Boris Johnson is 'doing a good job in beating himself'

Good Morning Britain host Ben Shephard has hit out at Prime Minister Boris Johnson after the Conservative party brutally lost the North Shropshire by-election.

Ben, 47, was speaking to Liberal Democrats leader Sir Ed Davey about his party's sensational victory in the North Shropshire by-election which dealt a hammer blow to Boris Johnson's battered leadership.

Lib Dems candidate Helen Morgan overturned a huge 22,949 Conservative majority in the ballot triggered by the resignation of shamed Tory Owen Paterson.

And while Sir Ed said he thought the win was "a watershed moment", the GMB presenter said the win shows Boris is "doing a good job in beating himself".

Ben told his guest: "[There are] Real questions over his leadership as your candidate who won yesterday made very clear the lack of leadership coming from Boris Johnson is one of the reasons [for the win]."

Sir Ed, who was isolating due to Covid, had originally said: "The sun is shining on the politics side and I think this is a watershed moment in British politic because it's such a spectacular result."

He said the party can go into the festive party "pretty merry" after the tories lost two of their "safest seats" this year.

Ben's co-host Charlotte Hawkins also questioned whether the vote was more of a protest against Boris Johnson rather than a vote of confidence for Sir Ed's party.

While Sir Ed agreed in a way, he claimed his party member's win was more down to her brilliant campaign and their views on the health service and cost of living.

He continued: "If you ad this victory to our victory in true blue Buckinghamshire earlier this year, the blue wall idea that I've been talking about that we are taking the fight to the tories in their heartland, I think it's been proven we've been selecting amazing candidates for the seats we hope to take off the tories.

"I think the victories in the two by-elections this year show that we can do that. We can beat the conservatives."

Earlier in the day, a veteran Tory claimed it is "last orders time" for the PM, saying he's got "one more strike and he’s out."

Sir Roger Gale, 78, even threatened a leadership challenge against the Prime Minister in the wake of the disastrous North Shropshire by-election.
