GMB's Andi Peters takes swipe at 'headmistress' Priti Patel

Andi Peters took a surprising swipe at Priti Patel following her appearance on Good Morning Britain.

The home secretary was on the ITV news programme to discuss the asylum system shake-up which will see tougher immigration rules implemented.

It comes as details on how the government intends to deal with people entering the UK illegally are due to be set out today (Wednesday).

Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard asked Ms Patel if she was being "tougher and harsher" with the new rules.

She said: "First of all, what I think is very important to acknowledge is that we absolutely need to do the right thing by those that are fleeing persecution.

"That is the right thing, it is fair and as a country we have been doing that over recent years… Now there is something more fundamental here about the changes we are bringing in… We want to start to address, in a way in which we have not as a country and a Government previously, illegal migration, individuals that have travelled to the UK illegally have now made up an enormous number of the asylum cases.

"To deal with that, we want to create safe and legal rules and stop people from putting their lives in the hands of the smugglers, of criminal gangs, of the facilitators…

"There is an enormous trade in terms of criminality and illegal migration and it is not just people who are being smuggled, it’s drugs and it's all the things that quite frankly we cannot turn a blind eye to and our system needs to address this."

Following the one year anniversary of lockdown being introduced in the UK yesterday (Tuesday), Ms Patel was also asked if the country should have locked down earlier and if our borders are still "too porous" given the amount of people still coming into the UK .

"They are not too porous at all," she replied. "A whole series of measures have been put in place."

Following the interview, it was time to pass over the the competition with Andi but he started on a different note.

"Wow it is like watching the Headmistress talk to us about all of the subjects as we sit in our houses," he fumed.

"Cheers love. Woah. I am exhausted.

"I mean I don't do political as you know but wow. Wow. Wow."

Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid were quizzing the health secretary (ITV)

And viewers were taken aback too.

"Brilliant Andi, in response to Priti Patel interview on GMB, “I don’t do politics, but wow," tweeted one.

Another said: "Oh my god that was awkward, Andy peters is the king of awks!!!! #GMB."

"@andipeters is pure delight on @GMB , we need more Andi!" a third added.
