GMB’s Alex Beresford on George Floyd murder verdict: Justice, but it’s not true justice

Bristol TV presenter Alex Beresford has reacted to the guilty verdict in the murder trial of a former police officer who kneeled on George Floyd’s neck.

Derek Chauvin was found guilty by a jury yesterday (Tuesday, April 20) for the killing of 46-year-old Mr Floyd in Minneapolis in May 2020.

Good Morning Britain weather presenter Alex, 40, gave his reaction to the conviction on twitter: “This is justice, but it’s not true justice.”

He added: “It’s undeniably the most notable example of accountability in the killing of black people at the hands of the police.

“Sadly many didn’t get their justice, but I hope that today’s verdict brings hope that a sea change is now happening.”

Mr Floyd’s death at the hand of Chauvin caused outrage around the world and led to Black Lives Matter protests, including in Bristol where the Edward Colston statue was pulled down because of his slavery role.

Chauvin, 45, had denied second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter during the 15-day trial.

The jury found him guilty on all counts unanimously.

Mobile phone footage showed Mr Floyd moaning and gasping while he pleaded to the officer kneeling on his neck, saying: "Please, I can't breathe."

Alex Beresford's tweet got lots of support.

One said: "I was so so nervous. It's a start and hopefully a major start of things that need to change."

Others said: "I feel, at least we can sleep tonight", "Hear, hear Alex" and "No other verdict could or would have been acceptable."
