GMB's Alex Beresford informed by Dr Sarah Jarvis he's wearing wrong face mask

Alex Beresford has been informed by Dr Sarah Jarvis that he has been wearing the wrong face mask as new rules for shops are brought in.

The Good Morning Britain weather presenter received criticism on social media after posting a photo of himself on Twitter wearing a black mask with a filter.

He uploaded the photo of himself in a taxi with the caption: "The new normal."

So today he asked the new ITV doc, who is standing in for Hilary Jones, whether his mask should be replaced.

As of tomorrow (July 24), face coverings will be compulsory in shops and on public transport in England, in a bid to prevent coronavirus from spreading.

Those who do not comply with the new rule could face a fine.

Alex asked: "I want to know what is the correct type of face mask to wear because yesterday, I was travelling to London in the back of a cab and I was rightly wearing a face mask.

“I tweeted a picture of me wearing the face mask and then I had a few people come at me on Twitter saying I was wearing the wrong type of face mask because mine had a filter.

Alex Beresford told by GMB doctor he is wearing wrong face mask after social media backlash (ITV)

“Although it filters the air coming in and protects me, it doesn't protect people from me when I breathe out.

“Is that true and should I change my face mask?"

Dr Sarah explained that the style Alex was wearing in the photo should only be used by healthcare workers.

"On the whole, we would recommend the ones that don't have a filter,” she replied

"There are face masks with filters - the so-called PPE masks - those should absolutely be reserved for health care workers as there is a global shortage of them.

"What we do recommend is at least two layers, preferably three and that's new as we see that there is evidence of better protecting other people.”

GMB airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
