GMB's Alex Beresford give heartbreaking account of his grandma who died alone in a care home

Alex Beresford today gave a heartbreaking account of how his step grandmother died.

Good Morning Britain’s weatherman opened up about the devastating death of Ivy Stewart, who died alone in a care home.

And if that wasn’t heartbreaking enough, they now face a wait to hear whether she had contracted COVID-19.

He told his GMB colleagues Ben Shephard and Ranvir Singh that despite having a cough, he believes his grandmother - who used to work in care homes when she first came to England - didn't have coronavirus.

“We don’t believe she died of COVID-19, although we understand she did have a cough in the last week,” he said, via video link. “But we don’t believe it’s covid - we’re still waiting to find out.

"Whatever reason she died of, the circumstances are still very much the same.

"Because she was in a care home it was understandably on lockdown, and unfortunately for us as a family it meant we missed her last Mother’s Day, her 77th birthday - and her last day.”

Alex explained that in normal circumstances the family would have gotten together to make sure she was not alone as she passed away.

"She comes from a massive family. But unfortunately, like many people who are passing away in these circumstances, they’re passing away alone,” he said.

"My mum, my step dad, my aunty and uncle are fairly vulnerable so they’re staying indoors until June, which obviously makes the situation even worse.”

Alex added that his “heart goes out” to anyone in the country who is having to deal with a family tragedy.

He went on to describe his grandmother as a “very powerful, strong woman” who was also “very god-fearing”.

He said: "In her later years if you asked if she was okay, she would say, ‘I’m okay, but the lord knows best’. I think that’s helping us all get through this.

"She was a very strong woman and an amazing cook. I used to love going to her house for Sunday dinner. We will miss her massively."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
