GMB's Adil Ray grimaces at 'vile' awkward birthday gift from Susanna Reid

Good Morning Britain's Susanna Reid, 50, presented her co-host Adil Ray a birthday gift after he turned 47 on Monday, but it was met with a poor reception as Adil branded it "vile".

"I just want to say a huge happy birthday this morning -" Susanna began.

"To Adil?" asked Ranvir Singh.

Susanna joked: "To the programme, because we launched on this day in 2014! But it is of course the third day of your birthday celebrations, as well as your birthday," she told Adil.

"And I've got you a special present for day three of the birthday celebrations, got you a pair of Crocs," she added, holding up a garish pink pair of the shoes.

Adil declared: "They are disgusting things."

"Because yesterday you told me how much you love Crocs!" laughed Susanna.

Adil ranted: "I hate these things, they are vile, apparently they are back in fashion.... They are vile things."

Adil, who turned 47 on Monday, had specifically articulated his feelings about crocs the day before (ITV)

Entertainment correspondent Richard Arnold joked: "Don't even talk to me about Crocs, they were the must-have shoe of the pandemic, I understand we were all wearing something more practical with a bit more give in it.

"But now the sales have rocketed off the back of the Oscars, which is more than the ratings did, frankly.

"I always think the Crocs, and forgive me if you are a Crocs wearer at home, we all love a comfy shoe, but they are the universal sign that man has given up hope."

Susanna admitted on Monday she had no idea it was Adil's birthday (ITV)

Adil quipped: "They're a crock of something, I'll tell you that!"

Susanna defended them: "They are eminently practical!"

On Monday, Susanna was left red-faced after admitting that she didn't realise it was Adil's birthday, as she confessed that the GMB crew had forgotten to get him a cake.

As 'happy birthday' music began playing in the studio, Susanna said: "Happy birthday Adil!"

Charlotte Hawkins asked: "Where would you rather be, Adil?"

"Here in the middle of you two is the perfect birthday morning," he replied, holding out his arms.

"Yup, sorry we didn't get you a cake," Susanna said sheepishly. "I had absolutely no idea."

Laughing, Adil responded: "It's fine!"
