GMB's Adil Ray divides viewers as he confronts Oliver Dowden over racism row

Good Morning Britain host Adil Ray divided viewers as he stepped in to confront Oliver Dowden over racism in football and other industries.

The Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport appeared on the ITV programme to talk to hosts Adil and Susanna Reid about the European Super League proposal which has caused outrage among fans.

But as the conversation moved on, Adil challenged Mr Dowden after he said: "In the film industry, we have a fantastic film industry in this country, bringing in jobs for our children and grandchildren to be involved in.

"That is why we are creating opportunities for people who can't normally access that, particularly people from minority backgrounds."

Adil began to interrupt: "But what you're talking about, that is systemic racism isn't it?

"That is a system. The movie industry is a system that you have identified that does not create the right and fair opportunities for black people.

"That is a sign of systemic racism, isn't it? That is not a racist film director, or a racist film company owner. That is the system. That is systemic racism.

"So why can't we just say that's what it is?"

Mr Dowden argued that there are "problems with opportunities" in all of those industries.

"And we are addressing them," he said before Adil came back: "So is that systemic racism?"

"I think systemic racism refers to society as a whole," said Mr Dowden replied before Adil quickly interrupted the secretary of state.

"Well I can tell you, society as a whole in health, in business, in sport, in finance, in schools, in crime, in justice, black people are worse off.

"I have just told you in just 10 seconds 10 different sections of society. That is systemic racism.

"Why can't you just say it Mr Dowden and then we can move forward and address it as a society."

He then asked: "What are you scared of?"

"We are taking action to address them," Mr Dowden replied.

Viewers watching at home did find themselves divided over the exchange.

"YES @adilray tell him how it is!!!!! #GMB," tweeted one.
