GMB Ranvir Singh gets emotional as Alastair Stewart quits over tweet

Ranvir Singh got emotional as she spoke about Alastair Stewart stepping down after a twitter spat.

The legendary broadcaster quoted lines of Shakespeare including the phrase "angry ape" during an argument with twitter user Martin Shapland, who is black.

Speaking out about his resignation and the claim of offensive Twitter behaviour, Stewart said: "It was a misjudgement which I regret, but it’s been a privilege to bring the news to households throughout the UK for the past 40 years."

Today on Good Morning Britain Ben and Susanna asked Ranvir what she thought about the issue and it was clear she was emotional.

Ranvir said:"He is a gentleman and has done nothing but encourage me.

"He's seen black people and their talent in the newsroom and wanted them to get more work, even though that means he might get less.

"I mean the quote wasn't from Enoch Powell, I don't think any of us know what that thread was about.

"I find it really unsettling, I wish this hadn't happened, I feel sorry for Alastair.

"I just think can you go back and unpick all of literature."

Ben and Susanna asked Ranvir what she thought Alastair meant about "misjudgement" in his statement.

And she said: "I don't engage with members of the public at all.

"But Alastair has done that and perhaps the learning is not to be drawn in.

"I think the misjudgement he speaks of is being drawn in."

*GMB continues at 6am tomorrow
