GMB presenter's report interrupted by '20 to 30' gunshots from protests in Minnesota

Good Morning Britain reporter Noel Phillips shared the moment his broadcast was interrupted by gunshots from protests in Minnesota.

His reports was played out on the ITV news programme on Tuesday morning but had been pre-filmed.

Noel was reporting from the Brooklyn Center amid protests following the death of Daunte Wright, who was shot dead by a police officer on Sunday.

The fatal shooting of the 20-year-old is being described as "an accidental discharge".

"There's a very tense standoff between protesters and police, as you can hear several gunshots…" Noel said during his report before a member of the crew interrupted him.

"We've got gunfire over there," viewers heard the crew member say before someone yelled: "Behind the cars. Now! Now!"

As they ran, Noel then could be heard saying: "We heard 20-30 gunshots from a group of men towards the police."

Noel then spoke about the moment with Kate Garraway and Adil Ray back in the studio in London, before revealing he looked up during the gunfire to see someone shooting bullets everywhere towards the police, the Mirror reports.

He later admitted he was wearing a bulletproof vest for his safety, as he continued to report from the scene.

"As a precaution when doing our job we have to wear body armours to protect ourselves," he said as he unzipped his jacket to show the bulletproof vest underneath.

Noel tried to share with viewers the mood in the area as the death of Daunte comes just 11 months after the killing of George Floyd by police in the same area.

"This is a community still trying to heal from the killing of George Floyd," he told the GMB hosts. "It's impossible for me to see at the moment how America can heal."
