GMB hosts mock Matt Hancock's ITV return after show boycott as he appears on Lorraine

Good Morning Britain presenters Ben Shephard and Charlotte Hawkins asked fellow ITV host Lorraine Kelly to grill Matt Hancock for them over his "boycott" of the show.

Lorraine had just confirmed the Health Secretary would be on her show to discuss the new coronavirus guidelines concerning face masks.

After clashing with Piers Morgan on GMB months ago, Hancock did not appear again - and other government ministers also appeared to decline to make appearances on the show too.

But Lorraine vented her frustration when the same started happening on her own show too, amid claims of a government boycott.

Just weeks ago, Piers mentioned the ongoing situation on the show after it had reached 60 days since government ministers last appeared.

But this changed, in Piers' absence, on Wednesday when Lorraine announced a U-turn.

While Hancock would not be appearing on GMB, something Ben and Charlotte brought up, Lorraine confirmed he would be on her show after 9am.

The news caught Ben off guard and he asked for confirmation, as a sassy Charlotte proceeded to mock the fact the boycott was still ongoing.

After Ben asked if he heard Lorraine correctly, she revealed she had been "assured" that the Health Secretary would be on.

He was coming on to discuss the new rules regarding facial coverings becoming compulsory in shops later this month, to help fight Covid-19.

Charlotte then quipped: "He’s actually making an appearance..."

As Lorraine confirmed, she savagely said: "Can you ask him where he has been all this time?"

Lorraine promised to grill Hancock ahead of his appearance, seeming just as surprised by the news.

The hosts then brought up the fact he had apparently denied the latest rumours, that could have seen facial coverings compulsory in office work spaces.

Before moving on, Charlotte couldn't help drop one final dig ahead of Hancock's appearance.

She said: "He didn't deny it here unfortunately, it was on a different programme."

It will soon be mandatory to wear a face covering in supermarkets and other shops in England.

Starting on July 24, those going shopping need to have their nose and mouth covered or risk a £100 fine.

This comes after rules requiring people to wear face coverings on public transport became mandatory last month.

Initially many experts and authorities, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), suggested face coverings were not effective in preventing the spread of coronavirus but are now recommending wearing them in indoor spaces.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
