GMB's Alex Beresford says his horrific Twitter abuse is 'too vile to repeat on air'

Good Morning Britain host Alex Beresford made the sad admission on Thursday's show that he is often subjected to horrific abuse on social media.

Alex, 40, had been speaking to Dame Mary Beard about vile internet bullying, and he revealed the abuse he gets on social media was too horrific even to read out on air.

He was hosting the show alongside Charlotte Hawkins when they interviewed historian Mary, who famously took one of her worst trolls out for dinner and wrote him a job reference.

Mary said: "For me it is a very simple principle and it would be nice to spread it wider, which is that you should only say to someone on social media, what you would say to their face.

"Sometimes you will be rude, we don't want a world in which no one is ever rude, that would be extremely boring. But the idea you hide behind the anonymity of social media, and letting out all your feelings of frustration.

"I am sure some of these guys, and it's not entirely guys who do this, I am sure they are sad souls. But we need to have a sense of basic politeness.

"You speak on social media, like you, I think, as you would eyeball to eyeball, end of."

Alex said: "I completely agree with you, Mary, because some of the things I see on Twitter, well, I would not even read out on this programme.

"So yes, it is a shame social media has gone that way."

Alex hosted Good Morning Britain alongside Kate Garraway or the first time in August 2020, and he commemorated the exciting new role with a tweet that said: "I grew up religiously watching ITV Breakfast because of my parents!

"Never did I ever imagine that I’d be co-hosting it with one of the best anchors in the game @ kategarraway one day. Pinching myself and beyond grateful @ GMB ".
