GMB guest recalls horror moment she lost her eye to rubber bullet at peaceful protest

Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard spoke to Nia Love on Thursday's show.

Nia lost an eye while protesting peacefully after the death of George Floyd in police custody, in the US.

She says the horrific injury was caused by police firing rubber bullets into the crowd, but the brave woman says she still does not regret protesting.

"It's a pain that hurts so bad you can't even describe it, and the eye is already a sensitive part of the body, it felt like I got hit with a cannon.

"As soon as it hit me it was pain, my eye swelled up, it was bloody, it was a lot."

She added: "I don't want to get too graphic, but they said part of my eye were blown out."

Nia said the protest was peaceful for 3-4 hours, before the crowd became agitated and several police officers arrived.

She added that the crowd was saying "hands up don't shoot", and Nia was just leaving when she turned to find her brother, when the bullet hit.

Police officers in the US are not required to report on their use of rubber bullets.

Nia's eye is shut and she is currently covering it with an eye patch as her depth perception is off.

There is a 99% Nia will be blind in her left eye, which was destroyed by the bullet, and she faces several surgeries.

Ben asked Nia if she regretted attending the protest since her life-changing injury, and she insisted she did not.

"No, I don't regret it at all," she replied.

Her lawyer Lisa Bloom added: "The police officer that shot Nia gave birth to an activist, and she is not going away, she is standing up for herself and the community.

"Police brutality at a protest over police brutality only underscores the truth of what all these protests are about.

"We will be filing a lawsuit, we will be looking for criminal charges, internal affairs complaints, and more importantly, we want to change the law so that no police officer fires these kinds of weapons into crowds ever again and injuring innocent people."
