GMB's Adil Ray clashes with Rishi Sunak after MP tells him 'you're wrong'

Good Morning Britain host Adil Ray clashed with Rishi Sunak on Thursday's show as they discussed the outcome of the latest Budget announcement.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer appeared on the ITV breakfast show live from Bury as he defended his economic decisions, which were announced on Wednesday.

During the interview, Adil made several references to Rishi's personal fortune and described him as "a very wealthy man" as he asked the MP if he thinks he can relate to those struggling financially.

At one point, Adil said: "When we know the most vulnerable people in this country are those that are going without food, what a disgrace!

"You had an opportunity yesterday in front of the nation to put that right and you didn't. You didn't solve that problem directly, why not?"

"Well actually, you said, 'just little bit of help with housing', actually that's the biggest cost that people have which is why a year ago we increased something called the Local Housing Allowance which helps our most vulnerable families with their housing bills. That is costing about a billion pounds per year," Mr Sunak replied.

"It means one and a half million of our most vulnerable families are seeing £600 a year more to help with their housing bills and rental payments because housing is a very important part of cost of living and we've already taken action on that," he added.

Some GMB viewers were not impressed with Adil's choice of questions during his interview with Rishi Sunak (ITV)

"People would have preferred that you put money directly into their pockets," Adil argued back.

"Instead the other thing that you announced is that some of the richest people in this country, which will help a lot of people down in the south, was that you are going to reduce the surcharge on profits for banks from eight per cent to three per cent.

"That is a huge cut. That is the richest people in this country being better off, how can you justify that?"

"You're wrong on both counts actually. To assume that people in financial services only work in London and the south is just completely and utterly wrong. I can't believe you're saying that," the MP replied.

Adil butted in: "I didn't say that! I didn't say the majority," but Mr Sunak was heard shouting over him: "Let me answer the question!"

"Well again, you're wrong actually because two thirds of people who work in the financial services industry actually work outside of London and the south east and they work in places all around the north, they work in the Midlands."

As Adil spoke over him again and mentioned the "surcharge", Mr Sunak grinned as he replied: "Can I finish your question?"

Some viewers felt there was no point in having the Tory MP on the show, and tweeted: "Absolute waste of time having any politicians on for interviews. You never get a straight answer. I'm pretty sure they hear a whole different question altogether! #GMB #Budget."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
