GMB fans disgusted as Edwina Currie calls Boris Johnson a 'phenomenon' amid party scandal

Good Morning Britain viewers were left sickened after former Conservative MP Edwina Currie called Boris Johnson a "phenomenon" - and appeared to suggest that Downing Street's rule-breaking Christmas party was just a "minor infringement".

It comes after the Prime Minister finally "apologised unreservedly" over a No10 Christmas party last year - but denied all responsibility, continued to claim he was told rules were followed, and threw his own staff under the bus.

Appearing on GMB, Edwina appeared to dismiss the scandal as she suggested that she was "much more interested in events right now", deflecting it by telling viewers to "get their vaccinations".

Even more outrageously, she went on to gush about Mr Johnson, saying: "Boris is a phenomenon! He dominates the airwaves! He has done for a decade! He is a remarkable man and he has all his faults. He's a real-life human being.

"We had a saint as the previous prime minister and bless her, she got absolutely nothing done. So I think most people understand that."

She went on to say that she "completely discounted" GMB's Twitter poll, which revealed that 88% of viewers wanted the Prime Minister to resign.

"Of course that's how people reacted," she said. "That's how people pile in on Twitter!"

Joining her in the debate was Owen Jones, who said that "people need to be able to trust their government", adding: "How are we expecting people to follow the rules when people at the top are bypassing them?"

Susanna Reid went on to ask Edwina: "Are you saying that people shouldn't report crimes if they were a year ago?"

"My own feeling is that [the police] shouldn't be chasing people for minor infringements," she replied. "Trivial stuff."

Adil Ray remarked pointedly: "It's interesting that you call it trivial stuff."

And viewers were certainly not impressed with Edwina's completely out of touch comments, with one tweeting: "I think Edwina Curry is seriously deluded. Just because she's she's retired tory, doesnt mean she wasn't born a liar and continues to be a massive liar. If that is a country standard, we are all f***ed #GMB."

While another commented "Oh god, Edwina Currie she makes me feel sick. #gmb"

A third wrote: "Edwina Currie really is out of touch!"

"Oooh Edwina Currie on to bat for #johnson as per usual, 'he’s a remarkable man' and he’s a 'phenomenon'. Oh do f*** off. #GMB @gmb #GTTO," another fumed.

One seethed: "Edwina Currie as clueless as ever."

"If Dianne Abbot had had a party a year ago, Edwina Currie would not be saying 'oh never mind, move on!' #GMB," another pointed out.
