GMB: Dr Hilary says it's 'foolhardy to think about foreign holidays'

Good Morning Britain viewers were told that we are halfway through the coronavirus pandemic on the first anniversary of the initial lockdown.

Dr Hilary Jones said that vaccination was the way out of the crisis, but now is not the time to be complacent despite the roll-out of vaccines and falling cases and deaths.

He told hosts Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid : "While we’re celebrating a year on, and a better control over everything, at least in the UK at the moment, we’re probably half way through and there’s no time for complacency.

"Because as we see what’s happening in Italy, France and Germany and out of control in Brazil, India in trouble, this is a global pandemic. What happens in the rest of the world affects us.

“So we have to be in control of our borders, be really strict about who travels and where they travel to and from and whether they quarantine when they come back.

And he added: “People talking about holidays at the moment, really, it’s not appropriate. It’s just foolhardy.”

Anyone attempting to take a holiday abroad will face a £5,000 fine under new Covid laws which come into effect on Monday.

Nobody will be able to leave the country without a reasonable excuse.
