GMB doctor reveals the real reason why face masks could leave you breathless

With just a few days to go before they are made mandatory in supermarkets and shops across the country, Good Morning Britain's new health expert has dispelled one of the biggest rumours surrounding face masks.

After a lot of speculation, last week it was finally confirmed that the Government were introducing the new law, which will come into force on Friday, July 24.

The new regulations will give police the power to hand £100 fines to people not wearing them, which will be reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days. Only children under 11 and people with certain disabilities will be exempt.

The weekend saw protesters in London take a stand against wearing masks and a number of people who have worn them again have complained that they've been left breathless.

However, GMB doctor Sarah Jarvis claimed that it's not the masks themselves that cause that side effect.

Speaking on Wednesday's show, she said: "You may think that you're breathless because of the mask but in fact you're breathless because of anxiety.

"If you have something on your face, you may well feel anxious about it and so naturally will start to feel more short of breath.

"The reason for that is that you have more adrenaline and adrenaline naturally makes you want to breathe more and make you feel breathless."
